Cows resting at Boltons Bench Lyndhurst New Forest
20" x 16" oil on mounting board
This painting shows a peaceful scene in the New Forest, Hampshire on the south coast of the UK. This particular area is known as Bolton's bench, a landmark just outside the small town of Lyndhurst, which offers great views of the surrounding area. The bench situated on top of a small hill is circular in design and has a giant yew tree inside its perimeter. The bench commemorates the Duke of Bolton, an 18th century New Forest Master Keeper. It is common to find many cows and horses wondering freely around the whole of the New Forest. In this view the scene is dominated by cattle, although a few horses can be seen up on the hill by the bench, amusing passing tourists to the spot.
The painting is done on a piece of acid free mounting board, sized at 20” 16”. It is painted in oils during July 2021 and loosely based on a photo taken a few years before.
