Oil and Acrylic painting

London Piccadilly Circus With Evening Light

60" x 40" oil on canvas

Piccadilly Circus during a London evening oil painting
The famous London landmark of Piccadilly Circus is the feature of this painting, completed during April 2019. Crowds of people visit the location each year, mostly tourists or people on their way to work in the surrounding area. One other type of typical visitors are the famous pigeons that frequent this and other tourist destinations. Two red buses finish the scene off as to be expected in a painting set in the London.
The name Piccadilly first appeared in the 1625 with a thoroughfare named after a shop that sold Piccaills, a type of collar. As a junction, Piccadilly Circus first appeared in 1819, the word circus indicating a circular route which changed when Shaftesbury Avenue was added to the current streets then in existence. Now the area is a junction for Regent Street, Shaftesbury Avenue, The Haymarket, Coventry Street and Glasshouse Street
Piccadilly underground station opened in 1906 and the first electric billboards appeared in the early 1900s. Up until the 1970s a number of building had illuminated advertising on them but this was reduced down to one building, which now carries LED around its curved profile.
The centre point of the painting features the aluminium cast Shaftesbury Memorial and the statue of Anteros, often mistaken for Eros. This was erected during the 1890s and was designed by sculptor Alfred Gilbert. It has been moved several times for construction work, or taken away entirely as during WWII. The large building directly behind was.
The building on the left was designed by Reginald Blomfield during the 1920s, and has been used many famous music retailers over the years.
Set with a early evening autumn light hitting the world famous location, this oil painting measures 60” x 40” and is painted on canvas.
